So I think this wee fish takes the cake in terms of being the most terrifying animal to roam the seas. Or in fact just the most terrifying animal. At 25cm or 10 inches this fellow may not look like much, however it’s known as the Black Swallower (Or Chiasmodon niger if you want to sound fancy) for a reason. You see, the Black Swallower is capable of ingesting (but often not managing the digesting bit) prey twice it’s length (one actually managed 4 times but died trying) and 10 times it’s mass. Pics or it didn’t happen?
And what I was saying about digesting. You see the only way we really know about the Black Swallower is through specimens that have floated to the surface after their prey has begun to decay and the gases released cause them to rise. Frankly we know little about them, and it stands to reason that the small ones would be more likely to float than the larger ones. So perhaps we could get even bigger ones, say ones capable of swallowing a human whole. Just saying.
